“What About Your Friends?”

TLC had a song come out in the 90s titled: “What About Your Friends?” The chorus said, “what about your friends? Will they stand their ground? Will they let you down again? What about your friends? Are they gonna be low down? Will they ever be around? Or will they turn their backs on you?”

If you were like me you sang the lyrics to that song without truly understanding the weight of the lyrics – understanding what we now understand in Christ Jesus. Now, we’ve all had those friends that just drain you dry – never want more out of life, never dream, never aspire to anything, and are content to remaining in the same place. We get an attitude with the ones who check us, saying to ourselves: “who does he/she think he/she is? I remember when they (fill in the blank) and now they want to act all new on me? I don’t think so…”

Some of us may have held on to these kinds of friends because we felt empowered to have someone “beneath” us in our circle. Some of us may have been the person who was content remaining, because we knew we could pull from the stronger person.

So the question is, what category do you fit into? Why did you keep certain friends around for so long? Why didn’t you ever change when they didn’t? What are you doing differently to get out of your current “friend” situation?

Love,

Pastor McKnight
